Beyond the Bite

How does a single abstract noun dictate the architectural and material logic of a physical environment?

3 Months

Process

The objective of the project was to translate the fluid, translucent, and adaptable qualities of a substance, into a retail environment that challenges the "set in stone" permanence of traditional architecture. The design was derived through a "word-to-form" methodology.

I deconstructed "Jelly" into its material properties: translucency, kinetic "jiggliness," and thermal "coolness." In the design development phase, these abstract markers were translated into architectural features, curved, organic wall structures that mimic fluid flow and translucent materials that manipulate light to create a submerged atmosphere. I used 3D modeling to emulate the space, ensuring the environment functioned as a responsive container for the brand.

A comprehensive store experience design including detailed floor plans, 3D visualizations, and a visual identity that incorporates the "fluted" and "scalloped" motifs of traditional jelly molds. The resulting space is a multifaceted environment where the menu, the lighting, and the architectural "foot ring" cohere into a single, immersive narrative.

Outcome
Reflection

By moving beyond the realistic limitations of a budget or standard brick-and-mortar logic, the project allowed for an inquiry into "dreamier" architecture. It reinforced the belief that a space is not merely a building, but an experience that takes the shape of the aspirations poured into it.
