Species as Script

What happens to the formal rhythm of a script when its structural logic is derived from biological stature rather than calligraphic tradition?

Process

I identified the formal tensions between the vertical, sturdy posture of the Tahr and the rounded, segmental flow of the Tamil phonetic system. By mapping the animal’s stature onto a typographic grid, I forced these two disparate logics into a single container. The friction of this translation was examining how a letterform changes when it is asked to carry the structural weight of a species.

working display font prototype (WIP) consisting of foundational vowels and consonants. Designed for high-impact use in posters and signages, the typeface serves as a playground, a literal Aadukalam, where the verticality of the animal and the inherent essence of the script cohere into a new visual vernacular.

Outcome
Reflection

Breaking traditional calligraphic rules is an inevitable result of allowing a script to take the shape of a new, external question. By forcing the Tamil script to adopt the "posture" of the Tahr, I discovered a formal rhythm that moves away from "standard" legibility toward a more specific, ecologically-rooted aesthetic.
